For Kyokushin Beginner Karate Belts – Karate Kids, Teenagers and Adults.
This list is designed to give you an idea of what a grading instructor is looking for in regards to the kihon (basics or fundamentals), at each belt level. This is by no means a complete list (meant as a good guide however). Stamina and sparring is also apart of gradings (sparring for Kyokushin blue belt and above). ORANGE BELT (10th KYU) – 1st belt
- A student’s ATTITUDE is equally considered in any grading assessment. We wish to see students not only growing stronger but also ever kinder, respectful, resilient and disciplined
- TSUKIS (punches/strikes): oi tsuki (jab punch), gyaku tsuki (cross punch), seiken morote tsuki (double punch), seiken ago uchi (punch to the face from face cover)
- DACHIS (stances): yoi dachi, fudo dachi, sanchin dachi, zenkutsu dachi and seiza (formal seated position)
- UKES (blocks): seiken jordan uke and seiken gedan barai and be able to do both of these with hands open in shuto position
- Be able to move in zenkutsu dachi and sanchin dachi while doing ukes and tsukis (see above)
- GERIS (kicks): mae geri (front kick), hiza geri (knee kick), kin geri (groin kick)
- KATA: taikyoku sono ichi and taikyoku sono ni
SENIOR ORANGE BELT (9th KYU) – 2nd belt - A student’s ATTITUDE is equally considered in any grading assessment. We wish to see students not only growing stronger but also ever kinder, respectful, resilient and disciplined
- Everything listed in previous belts
- TSUKIS (punches/strikes): seiken shita tsuki (upper cut), seiken tate tsuki (vertical punch), seiken kagi tsuki (round house punch), hiji ate (elbow strike)
- DACHIS (stances): musubi dachi, heiko dachi, heisoku dachi, kokutsu dachi
- UKES (blocks): seiken soto uke and seiken uchi uke and be able to do both of these with hands open in shuto position
- Be able to move in kokutsu dachi while doing ukes and tsukis (see above)
- GERIS (kicks): mae keage (rising front stretch kick), yoko keage (side rising stretch kick), uchi mawashi keage (inside rising around stretch kick), soto mawashi keage (outside rising around stretch kick)
- KATA: taikyoku sono san
BLUE BELT (8th KYU) – 3rd belt - A student’s ATTITUDE is equally considered in any grading assessment. We wish to see students not only growing stronger but also ever kinder, respectful, resilient and disciplined
- Everything listed in previous belts
- DACHIS (stances): kiba dachi, tsuru ashi dachi, kumite dachi
- UKES (blocks): the combined block seiken uchi uke with seiken gedan barai, seiken morote chudan uchi uke and be able to do both of these with hands open in shuto position
- URAKEN UCHIS: (back of the fist strikes)
- Be able to move in kiba dachi while doing ukes and uraken uchis (see above)
- GERIS (kicks): kansetsu geri, yoko geri, mawashi geri
- KATA: sokugi taikyoku sono ichi, sokugi taikyoku sono ni and sokugi taikyoku sono san
SENIOR BLUE BELT (7th KYU) – 4th belt - A student’s ATTITUDE is equally considered in any grading assessment. We wish to see students not only growing stronger but also ever kinder, respectful, resilient and disciplined
- Everything listed in previous belts
- DACHIS (stances): uchi hachiji dachi, neko ashi dachi, shiko dachi
- UKES (blocks): shuto mawashi uke, mae shuto mawashi uke
- TETTSUI UCHIS: (hammer fist strikes)
- Be able to move in neko ashi dachi while doing ukes and tettsui uchis (see above)
- GERIS (kicks): kansetsu geri, yoko geri, mawashi geri
- KATA: pinan sono ichi and sanchin no kata
YELLOW BELT (6th KYU) – 5th belt - A student’s ATTITUDE is equally considered in any grading assessment. We wish to see students not only growing stronger but also ever kinder, respectful, resilient and disciplined
- Everything listed in previous belts
- SHUTO UCHIS (side of open fist strikes)
- NUKITES (finger strikes) and HIJI UCHIS (elbow strikes)
- DACHIS (stances): kake ashi dachi
- UKES (blocks): mawashi gedan barai, juji gedan barai, hiji uke
- Be able to move in kake ashi dachi
- GERIS (kicks): ushiro geri x 3 methods (back kick), ushiro mawashi geri (spinning back kick)
- KATA: pinan sono ni and pinan sono san
